The Cité Plantagenêt is an essential district of Le Mans! Between historic buildings, cobbled streets and small atypical squares, locals and tourists have no shortage of things to see. To better enable you to discover this place, the city has been offering a tour plan for the neighborhood since this Thursday, November 14 with ten must-see places. It is available directly from the Tourist Office and at the Maison du Pilier Rouge.
How does it work?
For each monument such as Saint-Julien Cathedral, the Count's Palace, Place du Jet d'Eau or Square du Bicentenaire, there is a QR code printed on the map. The visitor must arm themselves with their cell phone and scan it to access various resources. “There are explanatory videos, photos, anecdotes or even riddles and quizzes for family fun”explains Sophie Moisy, deputy mayor in charge of heritage.
Each place is classified with a theme like “history and cinema” for the bishop's house where we learn that it is a place popular with film directors. The hanging house is classified as “observation and play”. A short quiz allows you to get to know the place better.
More than 2 million tourists in 2023
With this initiative, the city of Le Mans hopes “attract people”assures Sophie Moisy. “This plan allows tourists to discover the historical heritage for themselves and why not come back, for guided tours or to bring their friends along?” In 2023, the centenary year of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the metropolis hosted more than 2 million tourists. For now, in 2024, there will be more than a million visitors. The metropolis' objective is for visitors to stay longer, for their stay to increase from one to two nights.
