After his shocking death by Embracer, Warren Spector, creator of Deus Ex, speaks about this very controversial decision which has caused a lot of ink to flow.

For a time a group praised for its takeover of numerous studios with promising proposals, Embracer has since major financial problems better known under the much less laudatory name of “gravediggers of video games”. In his regular mowing to desperately save the furniture, we include a monument of the RPG and the cyberpunk universe: Deus Ex, as we learned at the beginning of 2024. Almost a year later, its creator, Warren Spector, confides to PC Gamer his incomprehension in the face of this tragic decision.

Deus Ex Drama for its creator

During the frenzy linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, Embracer felt pressured and bought back (without knowing that it would ultimately not have the funds to do so…) many iconic groups like Gearbox (Borderlands ) or Eidos Interactive (Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, among others). While a new game after the very good Human Revolution and Mankind Divided had been in the works for two years, the group decided to cancel it by laying off nearly a hundred people working on it.

Warren Spector, the original creator of Deus Ex, still does not seem to have recovered from this incomprehensible decision for him, as he recently declared to PC Gamer. “ I really have no idea why Embracer abandoned the franchise. From my point of view, its gameplay is still relevant, but the world and the situation clearly need a little update ».

As a reminder, the first Deus Ex released in 2000 was a true revolution in the RPG genre. With its futuristic and dystopian cyberpunk universe and its enormous freedom of action, the title has had a lasting influence on its world. Back in great form in 2011 with Human Revolution, the license once again stood out with an excellent action-infiltration RPG with themes that couldn't be more relevant, even today. Mankind Divided confirmed this in style in 2016. And it will a priori be the last Deus Ex game in history, barring a miracle. Its creator is even very skeptical of this idea. “ Honestly, if someone released a new game today, it might be seen as a documentary “. A major page in the RPG genre that turns forever? If this is the case, it is unfortunately to Embracer that we owe this sacrifice on the altar of questionable profit…
