These giant tarpaulins will allow workers to work in good conditions, protected from bad weather.
A winter without a roof but under tarpaulins. Partly destroyed by an arson attack on September 2, the Immaculate Conception Church in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais) will be covered with a giant umbrella to protect it from bad weather and allow reconstruction work. .
For this, an unusual scaffolding measuring 60 meters long and 25 meters wide is being installed. A structure that will help stabilize the building.
“We are in the process of completing the scaffolding structures on the outskirts, these structures will be used to support the umbrella that we will install in exactly three weeks. So the scaffolding will serve as access for future companions who will come to work on the building , but also to maintain, to reinforce the facades”, explains Alain Waelens, technical director at Réatub Échafaudage, at the microphone of BFM Grand Littoral.
Start of work in April
The umbrella should be operational by Christmas. It will allow companies responsible for reconstruction work to work in good conditions.
“We are in the process of recruiting the architect who will ensure the follow-up and then we will of course have to recruit the companies which will make it possible to rebuild the Church of the Immaculate Conception”, adds François Decoster, Modem mayor of Saint-Omer .
The start of work is scheduled for April. This Thursday, November 14, the pot launched by the heritage foundation to save the church amounts to more than 135,000 euros. But this amount will be increased on Friday by the contribution of an anonymous patron, to the tune of one million euros.
