“Once upon a time there was Syriza”, headlines the left-wing daily Efsyn. A bitter observation for a political formation supposed to embody an alternative solution to the conservatives, and in power between 2015 and 2019, in the midst of an economic and political crisis. Five years and two lost elections later, the party collapsed. “Today divided into three, and third political force in the country”, adds the opposition newspaper.
Since the surprise election of Stefanos Kasselakis as head of the party in September 2023, after the resignation of Alexis Tsipras, Syriza has entered a deep governance crisis, with internal conflicts multiplying.
Contested since his election, the man newly arrived in politics opposed the old guard of the party both on the direction of the policy to be pursued and on the exercise of power, leading to an irremediable split. MPs slammed the door to form the New Left party, while Kasselakis himself had excluded several rebels. The break was definitively consummated during the congress held this weekend, leading to the departure of Stefanos Kasselakis and his announcement of the creation of a new formation.
