The food price index of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stood at 127.4 points last October, 2% more than in September and 5 .5% more than its value recorded a year earlier.

This index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a range of food products at the global level, soared to its highest level in 18 months, driven by the jump in the prices of vegetable oils, indicates a press release from the FAO.

The vegetable oil price index rose by 7.3% in October, reaching its highest level in two years, due to the increase in the prices of palm, soybean, sunflower and sunflower oils. rapeseed, specifies the same source.

As for cereal prices, they increased by 0.9% in October, mainly due to the increase in export prices of wheat and corn, according to the FAO which adds that world prices of corn have also increased.

For sugar prices, they recorded an increase of 2.6%, while the dairy products index increased by 1.9%, thus being 21.4% above its recorded value l last year on the same date. This increase is mainly explained by the rise in international prices of cheese and butter, while conversely, the prices of powdered milk have fallen, notes the FAO.

Against this general upward trend, meat prices lost 0.3% compared to September, the press release concludes.
