Police discovered the bodies of a 53-year-old woman and three children, aged 2 to 11, after the fire was extinguished.

Fire tore through a six-story building on Sunday, and three adults managed to escape by jumping onto the roofs of nearby buildings.

More than 100 rescuers and 12 fire trucks were dispatched to the site to control the fire, the latest in a series of blackouts affecting the Vietnamese capital.

The lower three floors of the building, whose facade was covered with advertising panels, housed a shop and a warehouse for paint and construction materials.

This new tragedy comes a few weeks after 14 people died in a fire in an apartment building in the center of the capital.

Vietnam has experienced several deadly fires in recent years which have fueled doubts about respect for basic safety rules, sometimes ignored in Southeast Asia.

In September 2023, a fire in an apartment building in Hanoi killed 56 people, the deadliest in two decades in this communist country.

Furthermore, another fire on Sunday in the town of Bac Giang, 50 kilometers north of Hanoi, left three people dead.
