After three successful seasons sharing the Boston Bruins net, goaltenders Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark found themselves at opposite ends of the same rink on Saturday, for their first clash as rivals.
Ullmark only scored on 14 occasions, but his saves were enough to allow him to defeat his former teammate in a 3-2 overtime victory for the Ottawa Senators against the Bruins.
Swayman had a much busier night of work with 31 saves on 34 shots.
As fate would have it, it was a superb save from Ullmark in overtime that led to the winning goal. From the first seconds, Ullmark made a nice move to his right to deprive Elias Lindholm of the winning goal.
The play moved to the other side of the ice and a quick wrist shot from Brady Tkachuk allowed him to play the hero after 21 seconds in overtime.
Before the game, Swayman and Ullmark met at center ice to hug and take a photo together. Both men were known to celebrate Bruins victories with a big hug.
Ullmark was traded to the Senators this summer for a first-round pick, Joonas Korpisalo and Mark Kastelic.
Josh Norris and Michael Amadio also scored in the Senators’ victory, while the Bruins’ goals were the works of Pavel Zacha and Brad Marchand.
