What taxation for tobacco?
All these developments are not linked to taxation, since the taxes for 2024 were already recorded at the start of the year. These are simply adjustments to producer margins.
As a reminder, here is how the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes at 11.50 euros is broken down, of which the State recovers more than 9.50 euros:
- Excise rate (55%): 6.33 euros
- Excise rate: 1.43 euros
- VAT “inside” on the retail price (16.67%): 1.92 euros
- Gross discount from the tobacco shop (10.19%): 1.17 euros
- Manufacturer's margin (free): 0.66 euros
No increase in 2025
Should we fear further increases next year? The Minister of the Budget, Laurent Saint-Martin, assured in mid-October 2024 that the government does not plan an additional increase in tobacco prices in 2025. Indexation to inflation will be “contained”, he also said. promised.
