Several of the couple’s eight children were also victims of beatings and degrading treatment.
The attempted murder took place on January 29 in Verviers. On the day of the incident, the defendant stabbed the victim when she refused to allow him to search her smartphone. If the defendant denied any intention to kill the victim, the court considered that attempted murder was established, particularly given the location of the injuries and their depth.
During the previous hearing, the lawyer who represented the children reported beatings, spitting and insults from the father. In her statements, one of the young girls also indicated that with their mother, they were subject to beatings but also death threats.
While the public prosecutor asked for seven years in prison, the court sentenced him to five years in prison with probation for half of the sentence.
In view of the administrative situation of the accused, the court ordered his arrest and therefore his continued detention.
