Rescue services and a specialist company continued to dismantle much of the building overnight, stopping at regular intervals to check for possible victims in the debris. This operation will continue in the coming hours. “We will continue until we are completely sure that there are no more victims,” said local police spokesman Wouter Bruyns.

Police have so far only confirmed the identity of the first victim found. He is a 44-year-old resident of the building. The identities of the three other deceased people have not yet been communicated.

The police and the public prosecutor’s office have not yet provided any further information on the possible causes of the explosion. The investigation is still ongoing, they indicate. The investigating judge, a fire expert, the forensic laboratory and the Explosive Ordnance Removal and Destruction Service (Sedee) visited the site on Thursday to make the necessary findings. Several avenues are being studied.
