The measure went almost unnoticed while the whole world had its eyes fixed on the new tenant of the White House. On Wednesday, the Israeli parliament adopted by 61 votes to 41 a new law authorizing the expulsion to the Gaza Strip of family members – parents, brothers and sisters, spouses, even children – of an attacker, if they are considered as having “expressed support” or if they did not “report information about the terrorist act.” Including if they are Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, who represent 21% of Israel’s population.
A second law targets Palestinian children. It allows Israeli authorities to sentence minors as young as 12 to prison terms, including a life sentence, if they are found guilty of murder or attempted murder classified as a “terrorist act.” » or linked to a “terrorist organization”. Currently, Israeli law exempts children under 12 from criminal liability, and those under 14 cannot theoretically be imprisoned.
