In the past, the word queer was an insult. It was used to designate those who did not fit into the norm; its definition was “bizarre”, “deviant”. When the insulted elders seized it, they fixed it up and repainted it in other colors. Today, freed of its hateful charge, the word queer is a banner, a cocoon.

In the same way, since language is what we make of it, the authors of Dykes (edition “Feminist” points) are banking on the reversal of the stigma: “Yes, we are dykes. So what? By claiming the term, they write in the foreword, we take away its violence, the weight of shame and we fill it with pride.”

One year after the collective work Fags, directed by Florent Manelli, published by the same publishing house, the dykes have their say. Under the leadership of journalists Marie Kirschen, editor-in-chief of the lesbian magazine
