The fire was brought under control several hours after it started, around 1:30 a.m.
And fire important declared last night around 6:30 p.m. at ISDND (Non-Hazardous Waste Storage Facility) of the Colibri ecopole in Saint-Laurent du Maroni, affecting “a circumscribed area of approximately 3000 m² at the start of the discharge”. This area housed waste that had not yet been sorted, fueling an impressive fire.
Potentially toxic fumes
Quickly on site, the mayor and president of the CCOG, Sophie Charles, immediately mobilized the municipal police to warn local residents and invite them to shelter in place to protect themselves from potentially harmful fumes.
Fortunately, the fire was brought under control [aux environs de 1h30, ndlr] before spreading to the rest of the site.
According to the first hypotheses put forward, the recent severe heat could have contributed to the outbreak of this incident.
Around twenty firefighters were deployed to fight the fire.
