What is ’s new points system to be introduced in 2025?

The essential concepts to know about Formula 1 races

In total, twenty drivers have been taking their seats on board their cars since March 2 to tackle the 2024 Formula 1 season with twenty-four races. This act also puts ten automobile manufacturers in competition until December 8. This is particularly an opportunity for certain fans to place an sports bet to assess their analytical skills.

The distance of the circuit of a Formula 1 Grand Prix and the duration of a race are variable data. If the average bitumen to be covered by pilots is 305 km in an hour and a half, some tracks do not reach this length. The number of laps to be run by each driver in his car depends on the length of the track.

For example, on the 260 km long Monaco circuit, cars must cross the finish line after 78 laps compared to 53 on the longer French GP track (310.633 km). In F1, places on the starting grid are won through qualifying sessions commonly called Q. The driver who sets the best time during the final qualifying race obtains pole position at the start of the Grand Prix.

Contemporary F1 races no longer allow refueling for drivers. On the other hand, the regulations of this sport allow pit stops for tire changes, wing adjustments, etc.

The current points being revised and the new expanded points scale

Until twelve years ago, a success in F1 was worth ten points to the winner, and the points system only took into account the top 6. From 2003, and for six years, the only new thing was the transition from the top 6 to a top 8 of rewarded drivers.

The entry into force of the current points system came in 2010 while the point awarded to the fastest driver on the circuit is introduced in 2019. Additionally, in 2021, the point rule is introduced to reward the driver who signs the best time during the race, among the top ten.

For the 2024 season, only the top 10 earn points with one unit to the tenth driver in the race. The winner collects 25 points compared to 18 and 15 respectively for his two direct pursuers.

A new scoring mechanism was the subject of a proposal submitted to the FIA, which ruled for implementation from the 2025 season. This proposal m

and highlighted a points system which now rewards the first twelve drivers to the detriment of the previous top 10.

The application of the scale will result in eight additional points being awarded to drivers at each Grand Prix. At the end of the season, one hundred and ninety-two additional points will be distributed. Thanks to this increase in points, drivers and manufacturers earn nearly one and a half million euros in entry fees.

Alongside the previous points system, another proposal was introduced with a reward for all drivers and 50 points for the winner.

An advantageous scoring proposition

In summary, the new points system in effect from 2025 offers eight additional points on each race compared to the old one. That’s 196 more points for the season and 1.5 million euros in entry fees.
