Vice President Kamala Harris spoke in Washington for the first time since announcing her defeat by Donald Trump. In a speech, she confirmed that she had personally called her rival to congratulate him on his election as the 47th president of the United States. “I spoke to Donald Trump and congratulated him,” Harris said, promising to help with the transition of power.

In front of an assembly of supporters, and alongside a tearful Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate candidly admitted that this result “is not what we wanted, nor what we voted for”.

“I recognize my defeat but I am not giving up the fight” said Kamala Harris, referring in particular to the right for women “to make decisions concerning their own bodies”.

“My heart is heavy,” she confided, while calling for unity and acceptance of the results. “The lights of the United States will always remain as bright as ever, as long as we fight. We must accept the result of this election,” underlined the outgoing vice-president, appearing smiling as always despite the defeat.

“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” she said, asserting that the “light of the promise of “America will always shine (…) as long as we don’t give up and we keep fighting.”
