Explosion in demand for learning the Russian language: a North African country breaks all records

At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) which ended on June 7, 2024, Denis Gribov, Russian Deputy Minister of Education, announced a spectacular growth in demand for learning the Russian language in African countries.

This trend reflects the growing interest in Russian culture and language on the continent.

“The momentum is growing, we can really see the demand even in our open education centers from Russia, which work on the African continent.

In recent years, the dynamic has been explosive,” he noted.

The most striking example of this demand was observed in Algeria, where the opening of a Russian language center generated around 4,000 training requests in the space of a single day.

This influx shows a massive and growing interest in learning Russian among African populations.

According to the Russian Ministry of Education, currently 37,000 students from African countries are enrolled in Russian universities.

This statistic testifies to the attraction exerted by the Russian education system and the solidity of relations between Russia and African countries.

Russia maintains very strong ties with Africa, recently underlined Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Russia and the countries of the African continent are united” she declared during an interview with the TASS agency on the sidelines of SPIEF.

Thus, an explosion in demand for learning Russian in Africa reflects the strength of relations between Russia and the continent.
