Meghalaya Football Association takes stand against match manipulation, bans two Mizoram players

In a significant move to preserve the integrity of the beautiful game, the Meghalaya Association (MFA) has taken a firm decision to ban two footballers from Mizoram, currently representing Nongkiew Irat FC in the Shillong League. The action follows allegations of their involvement in match manipulation scandals that tarnished soccer in their home state, as officials reported on November 7.

Flavius Lalruakima and C Vanlalhriata find themselves among a larger group of 25 players currently facing disciplinary action from the Mizoram Football Association (MFA) over their illicit activities. The move is part of a broader crackdown on corruption within sport.

In an official statement, the MFA underlined its commitment to stand in solidarity with its sister association, saying: “The Meghalaya Football Association has today decided that it will stand with its sister association and deprive the same football players in Meghalaya.” The statement also highlighted the detrimental impact that match manipulation can have, saying: “We are aware of the damage that match manipulation causes to sport.” Thus, the MFA has resolved to respect the decisions of the Mizoram FA, ensuring that the affected players will not participate in any league under its jurisdiction.

The Mizoram FA had previously imposed bans on 25 players, three officials and three clubs, with sanctions varying from one year to lifetime bans from all football-related activities. The response follows extensive investigations by law enforcement agencies, which uncovered cases of corruption manifesting itself in the form of match manipulation – a major blow to the credibility of the sport.

Last season, seven of the players involved played in the Meghalaya League, highlighting the magnitude of the situation. The MFA president sent a clear message to the footballing community: “We want to send a strong message to players not to indulge in such illegal activities, as such behavior will not be tolerated in our leagues. ” This strong stance serves as a reminder that the love of the game must trump any desire for personal gain through unfair means.
