what world awaits us under Donald Trump?

The 45th President of the United States will also be the 47th. Donald Trump was elected this Tuesday and will be in the Oval Office again, starting in January 2025, making decisions that will influence the entire world.

What world awaits us under Donald Trump? The billionaire is preparing to take back control of the world's leading power. In the West as in the East, people and their leaders observe, wait, speculate, doubt and sometimes hope. Donald Trump will soon once again hold the purse strings that finance wars, protect populations and condemn others.

Seen from Ukraine, throughout the campaign, the president-elect continued to criticize the Biden administration. He emphasized how the massive aid in arms and cash granted to kyiv was unjustified in his eyes. Let us remember: without the support of the United States to counter Moscow's offensive in Ukraine, the country would never have been able to resist the Russian giant. This support may have cost Democratic candidate Kamala Harris dearly at the polls.

In an impoverished America, victim of inflation which is suffocating it, it is difficult to hear that dollars are being sent by the billions 10,000 km away. Donald Trump could well withdraw this support, at least in part. This is kyiv's major fear. And the hope of Moscow.

To force fate a little, the Ukrainian president sent a rave message to Donald Trump. Volodymyr Zelensky is eager to congratulate him personally and hails an “impressive” victory. On the other hand, Vladimir Putin didn't say a word. But his administration assures that it will judge on the actions. The door remains open.

Donald Trump has often repeated that he could “impose peace in Ukraine in 24 hours”, without ever specifying how. If he cuts aid to kyiv, indeed, the country could quickly fall. All he will have to do is negotiate an agreement favorable to Russia, thus warming up relations between Moscow and Washington.

What attitude in the Middle East?

In the Middle East, since the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023 in Israel, the United States has never stopped militarily supporting the Jewish state in its response against Hamas. But relations between the two countries are very tense. President Joe Biden openly criticizes Benjamin Netanyahu's policy, which is too bellicose for his taste.

So, for the Israeli Prime Minister, Donald Trump's victory is a godsend, a relief. It is thanks to him that the United States has considered Jerusalem as the official capital of the Jewish State since 2018. Israel's sovereignty over the annexed Golan Heights is still his. The lights are green. Benjamin Netanyahu is reassured.

The Palestinians, much less so. In Gaza, some have a little hope. They remember the repeated statements in recent months from Donald Trump who says he wants an end to the war. But in the occupied territories, nothing is expected, or rather the worst.

Finally, if we turn to Lebanon, a close advisor to the president-elect assures that he “will keep his promises to the Lebanese”. Donald Trump is already reportedly working on a regional peace agreement.

The climate, the big loser of the election

The third front, and this one concerns the entire planet: that of the climate. Hope is almost nil. Trump, the billionaire climate skeptic, wants oil, more oil, more oil to extract. The United States is the leading producer of black gold in the world. Limiting greenhouse gas emissions is not at all in his plans. He should, once again, withdraw from the agreements. Signed in 2015, they aim to limit the increase in global temperature to 2 degrees.

And it’s bad. Next Tuesday, the 29th global climate conference opens in Baku, Azerbaijan. The United States is the second country that emits the most greenhouse gases, after China. Their course of action, and therefore that of Donald Trump from now on, strongly dictates that of everyone else. COP29 seriously risks flopping.
