In Canada, MP Leslyn Lewis criticizes the Liberals for not supporting a bill against church burnings. Known as one of Canada's most prominent pro-life MPs, Leslyn Lewis criticized the Trudeau government for its apparent lack of support for a bill that aims to stem the wave of church burnings that is affecting the Christians of the country.

“In recent years, hundreds of churches and other places of worship have been burned in Canada. Under the current Liberal government, these crimes have increased by over 100%,” Mr. Lewis wrote on X.

“Where are the concerns or actions of liberals regarding these attacks on Christian churches?

Conservative MP Marc Dalton released a video on October 31, highlighting the recent wave of church burnings and how his bill, C-411, aims to put an end to this situation.

Bill C-411, or An Act to amend the Criminal Code (arson – forest fires and places of worship), was introduced by Dalton in June. If passed, this law would create specific criminal offenses for church burnings and forest fires.

Mr. Dalton said in his video that there is a “serious problem in Canada that needs to be addressed” regarding Catholic and Christian churches being targeted for arson. He noted that since 2010, 592 churches have been the target of arson attacks in Canada, with a large portion of these fires concentrated in recent years.

Dalton noted that the Criminal Code of Canada, as it currently stands, does not include specific protections against arson targeting religious institutions. Bill C-411 provides for a minimum sentence of five years of imprisonment for a first offense of this type, and seven years for a repeat offense.

Since the spring of 2021, 112 churches, most of them Catholic, have been burned, vandalized or defiled in Canada.

The church burnings began in earnest after mainstream media and the federal government broadcast dubious claims that hundreds of children had been buried and neglected by Catholic priests and nuns who ran some of the residential schools today closed in Canada, particularly a school located in Kamloops, British Columbia. The anti-Catholic discourse that grew in the wake of these claims continues to this day, although no bodies have been discovered.
