The great story of the day: an incredible 72-hour intervention to rescue a dog stuck in a cavity

It took emergency services more than three days to save this little dog stuck in a cavity in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

The intervention lasted more than 72 hours! Saturday November 2, 2024, the alert was given that a fox terrier dog was stuck in a cavity in Formiguères (Pyrénées-Orientales). He had found himself stranded during a hunting trip. The start of a long ordeal for the animal, which owes its life to the determination of the firefighters.

Why did the intervention take so long?

The little dog was finally extracted on Tuesday November 5 at 11:50 p.m., more than three days later. Because before that it was necessary to secure the cavity by clearing unstable rocks, otherwise the intervention could have cost the life of the animal or the emergency services. It was then necessary to widen the entrance to the cavity to allow firefighters to enter. Last phase: the intervention of reinforcements from the SSF (French Speleo Rescue) who have expertise in underground rescue. Specialized techniques were used, notably with explosive microcharges.

“Although slightly dehydrated with a small wound, he was immediately taken care of by a veterinarian and his general condition is considered satisfactory. He was able to be returned to his owner,” congratulated the Pyrénées-Orientales prefecture. “This success highlights the bravery and professionalism of the firefighters, who spared no effort to save a life. Their pride is equal to the magnitude of their mission and the newfound happiness of this animal and of his master”, shared the firefighters 66 on their networks.
