The municipality of Meis al-Jabal launched an appeal on Wednesday to the Lebanese authorities and international organizations to protect its government hospital in the face of Israeli threats. This village in the Marjeyoun neighborhood, located along the southern border with Israel, was largely destroyed following Israeli bombardment during the past month of heavy fighting.
According to a municipal statement, reports circulated late Wednesday afternoon that the Israeli army had planted explosives in the Meis al-Jabal government hospital, with the aim of completely destroying it.
Satellite images of Meis al-Jabal show several neighborhoods completely razed. Among the destroyed infrastructure, the municipality’s press release mentions all of its schools and educational institutions, hundreds of houses, retail stores, water tanks, the city’s call center and places of worship. The press release specifies that some cemeteries in the village have been leveled.
Since the start of its ground incursions into southern Lebanon, the Israeli army has placed explosives in neighborhoods and small villages, leveling entire areas and releasing videos in which its soldiers celebrate destruction. The army has carried out similar actions in Gaza over the past year.
Calling on national and international authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Meis al-Jabal asked these actors to “intervene quickly” and “conduct the necessary contacts to protect the hospital from this village against the brutal aggression of the Israeli army.
“The village has suffered more than 500 airstrikes since the start of the war,” the president of the Meis al-Jabal Municipal Council, Abdel Menhem Choucair, told L’Orient-Le Jour on November 4. More than 5,000 shells of various calibers were fired in the area, including phosphorus shells, which devastated our farmlands and homes.” Mr. Choucair also indicated that 73 people had been killed in Meis al-Jabal and that hundreds of others had been injured.
