Russia says Europe and Ukraine must agree on gas transit deal

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Wednesday that Moscow was ready to continue supplying gas to Europe via Ukraine, but that the deal needed to be approved by kyiv and relevant European countries.

The current transit agreement expires at the end of the year.

“Of course, in my opinion, European countries that currently receive gas through this corridor are interested in continuing this cooperation,” Novak, who is in charge of Russia's energy policy, told reporters on the sidelines. from the Valdai discussion club in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

“We are ready to supply (gas), but little depends on us, and this should probably be negotiated directly between the users and the country through which the transit is provided.

Russian gas deliveries to Europe via Ukraine are relatively small. Russia will ship around 15 billion cubic meters of gas via Ukraine in 2023, or only 8% of the maximum Russian gas flows to Europe via various routes in 2018-2019.

Ukraine refused to renew the agreement with Russia due to the ongoing military invasion.
