As polling stations gradually close in the United States, all eyes are on the results of the “swing states”, those which could decide the outcome of this presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris, 60, who in July replaced aging leader Joe Biden at short notice, can become on Tuesday the first woman to lead the largest economic and military power on the planet.
The United States, a federal country, has a system of indirect universal suffrage, crowning the candidate who manages to gather a majority of the 538 electors, or at least 270. Nearly 80 million Americans had already voted early, on 244 million voters. We will follow the announcement of the first results in real time, while each state won by Kamala Harris could swing the vote.
Vermont (3 electors)
Without much surprise, the former California prosecutor won this small state in the northeastern United States. In 2020, Joe Biden largely beat Donald Trump, obtaining more than 66% of the votes. According to initial estimates, Kamala Harris won by an even larger margin (69%).
Maryland (10 electoral votes)
A blue wave is emerging in the northeast of the United States, where Kamala Harris is the winner in several states, including Maryland. His Democratic predecessor won handily in 2020 (more than 65%). This is where the Democrat led her first official campaign meeting as a candidate, last July.
Massachusetts (11 electors)
Little surprise for this other eastern state, already Democratic, in which the former California prosecutor is expected to win. In 2020, Joe Biden obtained more than 65% of the vote, compared to only 31.1% for Donald Trump.
Connecticut (7 electoral votes)
Still in the East, Kamala Harris is in the lead in Connecticut, already largely Democratic in 2020. This state, whose orientation is not a surprise, was therefore not a “swing state”, these key states likely to swing from one side to the other.
Rhode Island (4 electoral votes)
The vice president of the United States also wins Rhode Island, as her Democratic predecessor did in the 2020 presidential election, according to estimates – although very few votes have yet been counted.
New Jersey (14 electors)
Another expected victory for Kamala Harris: New Jersey, where she is expected to win like Joe Biden before her. The latest polls saw the Democrat winning without difficulty.
Delaware (3 electors)
The Democratic candidate is on track to win Delaware, where she already has nearly 57% of the vote. As for the other states in the northeastern United States, no change compared to the previous presidential election.
Illinois (19 electors)
Illinois and its 19 electors are a nice catch for Kamala Harris, but not really a surprise. In 2020, the Democratic candidate obtained 57.5% of the vote. A score that the former California prosecutor seems to be approaching, according to the first counts.
New York (28 electors)
Another great catch, from a numerical point of view, for the Democratic camp: the state of New York, in which Kamala Harris is well ahead. During the previous presidential election, Joe Biden won nearly 61% of the votes, compared to 37.7% for Donald Trump.
Colorado (10 electoral votes)
The vice-president is given the winner in Colorado, like Joe Biden before her in 2020, with a relatively large lead (nearly 56%).
Washington DC (3 electors)
It is not a state strictly speaking, but the district of Washington still offers its share of electoral votes. And Kamala Harris largely convinced them: more than 92% of voters voted for the Democrat.
Washington (12 electors)
At the other end of the country, Kamala Harris is also expected to win in Washington State, a state that was already Democratic in the previous presidential election.
California (54 electors)
Another important numerical contribution, far from being a surprise: Kamala Harris wins California, according to initial estimates. This state is part of the “Blue Wall”, the “blue wall”, the color traditionally attributed to the Democratic party.
Oregon (8 electoral votes)
The suspense was not very great, for this other state of the “Blue Wall” which has not failed in its reputation. Kamala Harris wins Oregon, already Democratic.
New Mexico (5 electoral votes)
Kamala Harris is given the winner with a short lead in this state in the south of the United States, already won by the Democratic camp in 2020 with more than 54%.
Virginia (13 electors)
The American vice-president won in Virginia with a small lead, while the neighboring state of West Virginia was won by her Republican rival. A pattern identical to 2020.
Hawaii (4 electoral votes)
Although the count has not advanced, the State of Hawaii has already been awarded to the Democratic camp, as was the case during the previous presidential election. Voting by mail is particularly popular there, which explains the delay in obtaining figures.
New Hampshire (4 electoral votes)
The Democratic candidate is, for the moment, given the winner, with a narrow lead (51%) in this small state in the northeast of the United States.
Partial victories (2 electoral votes)
Kamala Harris won in Maine's 1st District as well as Nebraska's 2nd District. Which brings him two major voters because in these states, unlike the others, the “winner takes it all” rule does not apply.
