Since 2022, rising energy costs have led to unpleasant surprises for many social housing households. During the annual regularization of their charges, the amounts requested by landlords are often very high for these precarious tenants.
In Pierre-Bénite, in the popular district of Haute-Roche, residents gathered in a collective to protest against “the explosion of housing charges and excessive regularization”. “We are forced to choose between paying our bills or feeding ourselves properly,” says Fatima, one of the tenants, in a press release sent to announce the demonstration.
Accompanied by the “Locataires ensemble” association and the local France insoumise group, the collective is organizing an event in Pierre-Bénite on Thursday November 7. It will begin at 12 p.m. with a stroll through the neighborhood with Metropolitan Councilor Laurent Legendre (LFI), then with a gathering at 2 p.m. in front of the Graine de vie social center then at the Maison de la Métropole.
Increases in charges: recurring struggles in the metropolis of Lyon
This demonstration is not a first in the metropolis of Lyon. Rue89Lyon has already chronicled several tenant collective struggles against the high sums requested by landlords.
At the beginning of November 2022, we already told you about the anger of residents of the United States district in Lyon 8th, who denounced “regularization of abusive charges” in often dilapidated buildings.
In 2023, we are bringing you to the Brotteaux district. Several tenants were asked for sums ranging from 600 to 800 euros. Regularizations “five to six times more expensive than before”, commented Tennessee Garcia, coordinator at the Confederation of Families of the Metropolis of Lyon and Rhône (CSF), an approved association for the defense of tenants.
