A fire broke out on Friday 1is last November at 8:37 a.m. at the Épicerie du Coin in Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska causing major losses to the building located at 749 Route 289. The intervention involved 25 firefighters from the KamEst Fire Department and four others from the municipality neighbor to the east, Saint-Antonin.
When firefighters arrived at 8:42 a.m., they quickly realized that the fire was contained in the electrical room and the attic, with thick, black smoke coming from the roof. However, there were no visible flames escaping from the facade.
Fortunately, the employees and customers had already been evacuated so the firefighters immediately mounted an initial attack with four firefighters who accessed the electrical room from the rear and combined their movements with ventilation of the building through the through several holes to evacuate the hot gases.
The fire was completely brought under control around 9:50 a.m. and firefighters left the scene at 12:50 p.m., after ensuring the safety of the area.
According to the director of the Kam-Est fire safety service, Robin Laplante, contacted by the Placoteuxthe cause of the fire is possibly an electrical problem, although an investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause. Furthermore, no criminal origin was considered, because there were no signs suggesting such a scenario.
“The assessment of the damage is complex and does not make it possible to determine a precise amount, although the damage is considerable. However, this is not a total loss. The situation remains to be examined by the insurer for a more precise estimate of costs,” concludes Mr. Laplante.
