The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) revealed new details on Tuesday on the circumstances surrounding a police intervention that occurred Monday in Salluit, in Nunavik, which left one dead and one injured.

According to the press release published Tuesday by the BEI, the intervention began around 4:10 a.m. Monday with a call to 911 for a person who allegedly tried to drive while impaired. Two police officers from the Nunavik Police Department arrived in the following minutes and there was a “physical altercation”, according to the expression used by the BEI, with two people who were on the scene.
The police then allegedly used an electric shock weapon and cayenne pepper in an attempt to subdue the two people, but without success.
A police officer then allegedly fired at one of the two people, injuring them, but the altercation continued with the second person. The police officer allegedly fired a second time, hitting the second person.
The police provided first aid to the two people with gunshot wounds until the arrival of the responders, who transported them to the hospital.
One of the two people died, the other is in stable condition.
The Sûreté du Québec, acting as an independent police force, was called upon to conduct a criminal investigation while the BEI was asked to analyze the circumstances of this tragic event.
The BEI investigates all cases where police intervention or detention results in the death, serious injury or firearm injury of a civilian. Five BEI investigators were tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the intervention.
