The Côtes-d'Armor Assize Court is preparing to judge the mother and stepfather of a three-year-old child, who died in July 2022 in Guingamp.

The mother, aged 22 at the time, is being prosecuted for deprivation of care and failure to provide assistance to a person in danger of a fifteen-year-old minor.

A mother and her partner face justice for the death of a child

Her companion, seven years older, faces charges of murder and violence against a minor aged fifteen by a person in authority.

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday July 10, 2022, when the mother found her son unconscious in his room and contacted emergency services.

The investigation, conducted by the Guingamp research brigade under the authority of the Saint-Brieuc public prosecutor's office, revealed the unsanitary state of the accommodation. Both parents were drug addicts at the time.

The investigations then continued for several weeks, leading to the indictment of the two defendants, who had been placed in pre-trial detention.

Accusations of murder and violence: the charges retained

The autopsy carried out at the Medico-Legal Institute revealed numerous bruises on the child's body, indicating that he died of head trauma and that he had been violently shaken.

The trial, which will be held over five days, begins on Friday November 8, 2024, with a break during the weekend of November 11, with a verdict expected on November 15.

The victim's father and grandfather became civil parties.

While the mother will appear free, her pre-trial detention having been lifted in favor of a judicial review, her companion remains incarcerated and will appear detained.
