Probably the victim of a braking failure, Alex Albon pulverized his Williams into the barriers of the Interlagos circuit and the car should not be repaired to take the start.
The Thai driver had positioned himself at the top of the timesheet, but unfortunately the damage to his car was such (photo above) that it would prove irreparable, depriving Williams of a place in Q3.
Franco Colapinto's other car was taken out in Q1 when the young Argentinian made a mistake.
A grid still uncertain
The starting grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix is expected to change further as the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were also damaged and could be forced to start from the pit lane.
“It's over, there's no chance, Albon exclaimed. I know we had a problem… Immediately when I pressed the brake pedal, I heard a beep in my ear. This normally means that there is a fault. There was a blockage at the rear and then a big crash. We are out of the race unfortunately, this will not be fixed.”
Williams in the tough
Williams had hoped to regain the lead over Alpine in the constructors' championship, with the two teams now separated by just a small point, but qualifying events left little hope.
“I was spinning, I lost the rear very aggressively and I couldn't get the car back, explained Colapinto for his part. It was my first time in the rain, I made a mistake. I feel sorry for the guys, they will have work to do to get me into the race, I'm very frustrated.”
