Israeli army launches new call for evacuation of residents of Lebanon’s Baalbeck region

The Israeli army on Sunday issued a new call for the population to evacuate certain areas of the Baalbeck region in eastern Lebanon, warning of strikes against Hezbollah.

“You are located near Hezbollah installations and interests,” army spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a message on X accompanied by maps of the targets.

He also called for the evacuation of the village of Douris, located a few kilometers south of the thousand-year-old city which has a group of Roman temples listed as UNESCO world heritage sites.

Baalbeck and Douris had already been targeted by a series of strikes on October 30.

“For your safety and that of your family members, you must immediately evacuate the (targeted) building and those adjacent to it and stay away from them for a distance of at least 500 meters for the next four hours », Specified Colonel Adraee in his messages.

On Sunday morning, the Israeli army reported “several projectiles” fired from Lebanon towards Israeli territory. Some were intercepted and others crashed into the wild, she added.

The army carried out new strikes in Lebanon on Saturday, including one on the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, which left one dead, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

The Lebanese Islamist movement, for its part, claimed responsibility for rocket salvos on Saturday on several targets in northern Israel and a military base near Tel Aviv.

The war that has raged since October 7, 2023 in the Gaza Strip has spread to Lebanon, where Israel has been carrying out massive air strikes and a ground offensive against Hezbollah, an ally of Palestinian Hamas, since September 23.

Israel says it wants to neutralize Hezbollah in southern Lebanon to allow the return of some 60,000 inhabitants of the north of its territory displaced by incessant rocket fire since the start of the war in Gaza.

Victims

More than 1,900 people have been killed in Lebanon since September 23, according to an AFP count based on data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

At least 71 people, soldiers and civilians have been killed in rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel since October 7, 2023, and at least 38 soldiers have died in Lebanon since the start of the ground offensive, according to a report established by AFP based on official Israeli data.
