Two TCL buses were set on fire in the La Velette district of Rillieux-la-Pape, near Lyon (Rhône), the Rhône prefecture told the Radio France agency on Friday, November 1. After receiving several stab wounds in Rennes, the young man went alone to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
There is an air of rising tension in certain sensitive neighborhoods. This is the second night in a row that violence has occurred in this town near Lyon. Due to these incidents, TCL network buses will no longer serve the Velette district until November 11 inclusive.
Around 7 p.m. on Friday, police intervened in the Velette district to stop a wild barbecue on the public highway. A heated arrest followed, says a source close to the matter at Agence Radio France. A few hours later, around 9 p.m., on the same avenue du Général Leclerc, buses were blocked, stoned and set on fire by around twenty individuals. For fear of the flames spreading, residents of an adjacent building were evacuated, before returning to their apartment.
A police officer slightly injured
At the same time, the police deployed on site came under projectile fire. One of them suffered a minor head injury and was taken to hospital. Calm returned around 11 p.m. after CRS were sent to reinforce the area. The delegated prefect for defense and security visited the site, accompanied by the mayor of the town, Alexandre Vincendet. Shortly before midnight on Friday, the Rhône prefecture clarified on the social network “will be mobilized this weekend alongside the national police and municipal police”.
