At the cinema, watching foreign films in the original version is often easier for people deaf et misunderstandingI know that they French filmswho they are rarely subtitles. An aberration and a lack of inclusiveness against which more and more municipalities are fighting, like that of (Haute-Garonne)owner of Cinema Rex.

Four screenings per month accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing

The cinema located near Toulouse now offers subtitled screenings with the dialogues and descriptions of thesound ambiance.

Four sessions per month will be adapted to deaf and hard of hearing people : “It only takes one viewer to request it for them to be activated,” emphasizes Isabelle GarciaRex coordinator and projectionist.

The first session offered in subtitles by Ciné Rex concerned the film The BarbariansMonday October 21. However, no one asked activation of the device. “It’s normal, we need time to make it known,” reassures Isabelle Gardia.

Next session on November 4

A second screening took place of the film When autumn comesOctober 29. In the coming weeks, deaf and hard of hearing subtitles will be offered for Souleymane’s story on November 4 and It’s the world upside down November 6th.

The programming of the following weeks will be indicated soon. The projections concerned are identifiable in the program thanks to the SME logo (deaf and hard of hearing) representing a blue square with a barred ear.

Soon another inclusive system?

On this path to inclusion in cinema, the Ciné Rex should continue its actions with a system ofaudiodescriptionintended for people who are ill- and blind. Deployment is seriously considered for next year. However, “we first need to get helmets and other equipment,” says Isabelle Garcia.
