The second day of celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings of June 6, 1944 in Normandy, will be marked by several speeches, including that of Joe Biden. The D.Day tribute day will begin with the traditional ceremony at the British memorial at Ver-sur-Mer in Calvados, in the exceptional presence of King Charles III. Follow our live stream.

A historic day. This Thursday, the anniversary of the Allied landings of June 6, 1944 in Normandy, will be marked by many important speeches. D.Day will begin with the traditional ceremony at the British memorial at Ver-sur-Mer in Calvados, in the presence of King Charles III. The President of the Republic and Brigitte Macron will be welcomed on site by the British monarch and Queen Camilla. Several readings of testimonial letters from veterans will be done.

A speech by Charles III

King Charles III will deliver a speech in tribute to the British soldiers who died in Normandy. More than 20,000 soldiers under British command died during this battle. This speech will mark the first trip for the Buckingham resident since the announcement of his cancer. Shortly after, a wreath will be placed on the war memorial by Charles III and Emmanuel Macron. They will be followed by the British Prime Minister, the Chief of Staff of the British Armies and the Commander of the Royal British Legion, who will also lay wreaths.

The President of the Republic, the First Lady, His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla will subsequently speak with British veterans. The French victims will also be honored with a bouquet of flowers placed by Camilla and Brigitte Macron at the foot of the dedicated memorial.

A Franco-American ceremony

After this commemoration in tribute to British soldiers, Emmanuel Macron and his wife will go, at 12:30 p.m., to the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer where they will be welcomed by Joe Biden and his wife. An honor to the emblems will be performed, accompanied by the French and American anthems. The President of the Republic will then speak on the occasion of the presentation of the insignia of Knight of the Legion of Honor to 11 American veterans. The tenant of the White House will give a speech which will be followed by the bells and a flypast.

A landing ceremony at Omaha Beach without Russia

Emmanuel Macron and his wife will leave Colleville-sur-Mer at 1:30 p.m. to go to the international ceremony of the 80th anniversary of the landing at Omaha Beach which should last from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The President of the Republic will welcome 25 heads of state and government and their spouses. A film of the Normandy landings will be broadcast and the Legion of Honor will be awarded to two American veterans. The President will then take the floor for a speech before letting the Marseillaise sound and a flypast begins.

Guests include the likes of Volodymyr Zelensky, Prince William and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Russia, initially invited, will ultimately not be represented, clarified the Élysée. However, it was emphasized that the contribution of the Russian people and all those who formed the USSR would nevertheless be honored. Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, will also be present. He will chair the Franco-Canadian ceremony the same day, in Courseulles-sur-Mer, alongside his counterpart Gabriel Attal.

Emmanuel Macron will end this long day with an interview given in the 8 p.m. broadcast of TF1 and France 2. He will discuss the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and will also speak on the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
