His decision could improve McLaren’s Lando Norris’s chances of reducing the Dutchman’s 47-point lead in the Formula One Drivers’ Championship.
The FIA confirmed Verstappen’s decision on Friday, the day of free practice at the Interlagos circuit.
Drivers are allowed to use four engines throughout the season.
Verstappen had already served a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his seasonal engine quota during the Belgian Grand Prix in July. It was his fifth penalty of the season.
Three-time reigning world champion, Verstappen leads the general classification with four races to complete before the end of the season.
During his press conference on Thursday, Verstappen had expressed doubts whether he would change engines for the weekend’s race.
