LFI deputy Louis Boyard demanded on Friday the cancellation of the France-Israel football match scheduled for November 14 due to Israeli strikes in Gaza and Lebanon, a request rejected for a “question of principle” by the Minister of the Interior .
“I want this match not to take place”, launched on Sud Radio Louis Boyard, elected from the radical left party “La France insoumise”, relaying a petition in favor of the cancellation of this League meeting nations scheduled for November 14 at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, near Paris.
Referring to the Israeli bombings, the MP invoked “article 4 of the FIFA statutes which explains that universal human rights must be respected”.
He argued that the International Federation had “sometimes applied sanctions to other countries” such as Russia, Belarus or South Africa. “But on the other hand, when it comes to the policy of the Israeli government, we do absolutely nothing,” denounced Mr. Boyard, calling for an end to “double standards.”
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, interviewed on BFMTV-RMC, however assured that the meeting would take place. “We will of course adapt the security system,” he stressed.
“An extremely reinforced security system”
The Paris police chief, Laurent Nuñez, had promised two weeks ago “an extremely reinforced security system which will be of a very high level”, both “outside and inside the stadium”.
In this context, the Minister of the Interior recognized that the capacity of 80,000 spectators could be revised downwards. “This is a point that we are currently studying,” admitted Mr. Retailleau.
Castigating the radical left party, which according to him seeks to “import the conflicts of the Middle East into our neighborhoods and into France”, the minister assured that the smooth running of this meeting was “a question of principle”. “We are in France and we must be able to enforce public order,” he insisted.
