Figo in 2000
Despite his victory and his XXL performances at Euro 2000 withFrench team, Zinedine Zidane did not win the Ballon d’Or in 2000, two years after his post-World Cup coronation in 1998. It’s the Portuguese Luis Figoauthor of a very big 1999-2000 season with the FC Barcelona (transferred to Real Madrid that summer) and semi-finalist of the Euro, who was crowned in front of Zidane. An edition that sparked debate.
Down a 2003
Certainly, Arsenal had failed to progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League and did not win any major trophies during this 2002-2003 season. But the statistics of Thierry Henry remained no less maddening: 24 goals and 22 assists in 37 Premier League matches, as well as 7 goals and 3 assists in 12 Champions League matches! How can we not talk about this 2006 edition… Fabio Cannavaro raised the Ballon d’Or after winning the World Cup with Italy, and yet, other profiles seemed at least as legitimate as the former central defender for this edition. We obviously think of his two compatriots Andrea Pirlo et Gianluigi Buffonbut also to Thierry Henryvery unhappy in this 2005-2006 season where he played (and lost) the finals of the Champions League and the World Cup.
Messi in 2010
In 2010, Lionel Messi did not win the Champions League with the FC Barcelonanor the World Cup with Argentina, but he still won the Ballon d’Or. Saved by his big XXL statistics with the Barçait nevertheless sparked a lively controversy since other profiles like Wesley Sneijder, Andres Iniesta or even Xavi also stood out as natural contenders.
Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013
In the same way as Lionel Messi in 2010, the coronation of Cristiano Ronaldo three years later caused a scandal. Franck Ribérywinner of the Champions League with Bayern Munich and in the form of his life, was expected as a legitimate winner. Result of the races: the French striker only finished at the foot of the podium, behind CR7 et Lionel Messi.
