GERMANY – Incessant rains, floods, dike rupture: the situation on the rising water front is tense in southern Germany, several Bavarian districts having declared a state of emergency this Saturday, June 1, which allows the setting up a system to best coordinate relief efforts.

In Fischach in the Augsburg district, several people had to leave their homes and some had to be evacuated by helicopter, according to local authorities. A dike and a dam gave way, the Schmutter River burst its banks and roads were flooded.

It’s a terrible situation when you look at it, the images are painful, especially for the residents for whom it is obviously unbearable. The county commissioner and the Minister of the Interior have already mentioned it: we in Bavaria are facing a crisis” said Markus Söder, as you can see in the video at the top of the article. The Minister President of Bavaria also praised the work “ together » from the police, firefighters and organizations like the Red Cross.

400 people mobilized

Baden-Württemberg, neighboring Bavaria, was also heavily affected by the bad weather. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) for its part announced that it had mobilized around 400 people in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg to fight against the floods.

Rail traffic was disrupted in these regions: no trains ran on the Munich-Bregenz-Zurich line and on the Stuttgart-Ulm-Augsburg-Munich line, Deutsche Bahn said.

The municipality of Meckenbeuren, in the Lake Constance district, recommended on Friday evening that around 1,300 people leave their houses and apartments due to the risk of flooding.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of continued rain in the southern half of Germany, which is expected to ease this Sunday.
