A few hours before the “conflagration” of the Normandy coasts, which will start at 11:30 p.m., many people, sometimes in costume, will be walking around Utah Beach this Saturday 1er June 2024. On the occasion of a festival organized for the 80e anniversary of D-Day, dozens of kites representing octopuses, fish and flags covered the sky for part of the day.

“I was lulled into this story”

Jeep, American uniforms, flags… The atmosphere of the 80se anniversary of the Normandy landings is taking hold little by little. Anthony Ainard comes every year. He is dressed in an authentic Navy jacket: “I am passionate, I was lulled into this story by my father. It’s important to pay tribute to the guys who came in 1944. So I come every year. » An experience that Daniel Blanchard shares: “We didn’t spend a meal without talking about the Landings, about the Americans. » He has participated in commemorations for thirty-five years.

Various tactics for viewing fireworks

Ahead of the fireworks, many people will leave Utah Beach to view it from another location. “There are going to be a lot of people here, a lot of locals”predicts Daniel Blanchard. “We’re going to go to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue to see the coast. Because here it will be armored. But there is no question of missing this opportunity to celebrate this event which is both sad and liberating”, believes Caroline. Jean-Claude and Brigitte combine business with pleasure: “We wanted to see him here in Utah, and find a good place. So we arrived much earlier. »

While waiting for the sky to light up with fireworks, a stand selling sandwiches and beers was set up to fill empty bellies. To wait, visitors stormed the terrace of the emblematic bar Le Roosevelt.
