“2-year contract for Bayat”, transparency and high ambitions: what to remember from the press conference of Mehdi Bayat and David Helmer

After a few introductory words from Mehdi Bayat, David Helmer took the floor: “Charleroi is an important project for me as proven by my tenth visit in 15 months here” he said. Before asserting that the club’s income, which it wishes to increase by 5 to 10%, came 50% from the sale of players and that the club’s ambition was to build a strategy to qualify for Playoffs 1 as well as ‘in the European Cup.

The American leader also recalled the importance of the supporters who he wants to place at the heart of his project. “We want to reach an average of 10,000 spectators. This is a significant mark. We also want to reward the loyalty of the fans and offer them a memorable experience at the stadium.”

A magnificent tifo, Mehdi Bayat in the stands, a remake of Sclessin and a third defeat in a row: what to remember from Charleroi-Louvain (0-2)

David Helmer wants to focus more on training young people in Charleroi. The objective is to be one of the six best training centers in the country and succeed in bringing a player trained at the club into the starting eleven of the A team during each season and to double this number by 2027.

The club’s shareholder was transparent about the club’s expenses towards him: “Fabien Debecq and I are owners. We do not receive money from the club. When I come to Belgium, I pay out of my pocket my plane ticket, the rental of my car. The club only pays for my nights at the Van der Valk hotel.

Helmer also discussed the status of Mehdi Bayat, with whom a two-year contract was signed at the start of the season. “”He has goals to accomplish in terms of performance. There will be an evaluation and measurement of the work accomplished. This is the direction to follow. There are clear objectives. If they are not reached, we will ask ourselves the question: ‘Is this the right person to do the right job’. This was clearly said between the two of us.” To which the principal concerned added: “It’s good governance.”

Finally, it is the subject of the new stadium which arrived on the table. “We are still analyzing how we can reduce construction costs. By the end of the calendar year, we hope to be able to conclude the financial project in order to begin construction in 2025,” commented David Helmer. Mehdi Bayat added that they hoped to enter in 2027.

Can Charleroi’s current poor results be explained by a character problem? “It has nothing to do with mentality”
