THE Maghreb continues to confirm its status as a key region for global energy resources, traditionally dominated byAlgeria and the Libya thanks to their vast oil and gas reserves. Both countries have long enjoyed an abundance of mineral resources, propelling their economies onto the international stage. However, the Morocco, historically less endowed with comparable natural resources, is beginning to reveal its energy potential. Recently, a series of promising announcements have emerged, indicating a potential turning point in the region’s energy dynamics.

Cart, a company active in the energy sector, recently made headlines with the announcement of a significant gas discovery in Morocco. Well OBA-1, located on the Dartois prospect in the Loukos Onshore license, was successfully drilled to a final depth of 901 meters, staying on time and on budget. This operation marks the end of the first onshore drilling campaign led by the company in Morocco.

Detailed evaluation of data collected during the drilling of the OBA-1 well revealed the presence of gas reservoirs over a 200 meter gross thickness interval, in line with pre-drilling objectives. Additionally, a separate 70 meter segment showed high resistivity and significant gas measurements, suggesting the presence of a potentially exploitable gas layer not saturated with water.

Chariot indicated that additional analyzes are underway to prepare for productivity tests that will more precisely assess the commercial potential of this discovery. The well is currently being prepared for these tests and could be used as a production well in the future. Following this, the drilling unit will be demobilized.

Duncan Wallacetechnical director of Chariot, expressed his enthusiasm at this success: “ The successful drilling of the OBA-1 well on the Dartois prospect confirms the potential of the area and successfully concludes our first onshore drilling campaign in Morocco. These positive results reinforce our confidence in the viability of the Dartois area.. »

Wallace also outlined future plans for exploiting this discovery: “ We will integrate all the data obtained from the RZK-1 and OBA-1 wells with the 3D seismic data that we have reworked to optimize our future work program and maximize the impact of this discovery on the prospectivity of the Loukos license. Our efforts will focus on quickly bringing any commercial discovery on this license into production. » This strategy aims to accelerate the development and valorization of discovered energy resources, thus strengthening Morocco’s role as an emerging player in the Maghreb energy sector.
