Saint-Louis, May 28 (APS) – The governor of the Saint-Louis region, Alioune Badara Sambe, announced the establishment of a 250 megawatt gas power plant in the town of Gandon (Saint-Louis, north).

According to Mr. Sambe, this initiative follows clear directives from the central authorities and provides for the construction of a gas power plant initially with a capacity of 250 megawatts, expandable to 500 megawatts.

During a meeting of the interregional technical committee (Saint-Louis–Louga) to examine an environmental and social impact study of the gas pipeline connecting the GTA hub/terminal to the Gandon power plant, near Saint-Louis, Mr. Sambe specified that this plant will be supplied with gas by the Senegal Gas Network (RGS), a national company comprising PETROSEN, SENELEC and FONSIS.

He also stressed that the entry into production of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field, shared with Mauritania, will place Senegal among the gas countries.

The meeting was an opportunity for the regional technical committees of Saint-Louis and Louga to examine the document relating to the environmental and social impact study.

The general director of RGS, Joseph Oufom Médou, expressed his satisfaction with the project, specifying that the 400-kilometer gas pipeline between Saint-Louis, Dakar and the department of Mbour is under construction. The first phase includes a 45-kilometer offshore gas pipeline and a 40-kilometer onshore segment to connect the hub to the Gandon power station.

Mr. Médou confirmed that gas production at GTA will begin by the end of the current year and that the project is expected to be completed in 12 to 15 months, in anticipation of the start of operation of the plant in the first quarter 2026.

The services concerned, such as the Regional Water and Forest Inspectorate (IREF), the Marine Protected Area (MPA), the Directorate of Environmental Regulation and Control (DREC), participated in the meeting, as well as the prefect from the department of Saint-Louis, Diadia Dia.
