The United States and Canada said their warships crossed the Taiwan Strait together on Sunday.

The US Navy’s 7th Fleet said the destroyer USS Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Vancouver “conducted a routine crossing of the Taiwan Strait.”

It said the ships were sailing “through a corridor of high seas in the strait which lies beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state”.

The 7th Fleet added: “The United States rejects any assertion of sovereignty or jurisdiction that is inconsistent with the freedoms of navigation, overflight, and other lawful uses at sea and in the air. »

Canadian Joint Operations Command said: “Our activities promote peace, resilience and security in the Indo-Pacific region. »

China’s Eastern Theater Command said in a statement that the action by the United States and Canada will annihilate peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He expressed his determination to uphold China’s sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability.

The announcements from the United States and Canada come a week after China held large-scale military exercises in the waters surrounding Taiwan.
