SYMARVA aims to reduce the risk of flooding through measures adapted to each situation.

The Syndicat Mixte d’Aménagement des Rivières du Val d’Ariège (SYMARVA), led by Benoît Gaillard with Pauline Sallèles at the head of the system, operates over a large territory bringing together part of Ariège and Haute-Garonne, i.e. more than 150 member municipalities. This ambitious public program has the central objective of reducing flood risks through concrete, organized measures adapted to each situation.

The union acts on two major fronts: management of aquatic environments and flood prevention. To this end, it is currently conducting a Preliminary Study Program (PEP), thus preparing a Flood Prevention Action Program (PAPI). This program aims to establish a series of structured actions to better understand and anticipate floods while raising awareness among the populations concerned.

SYMARVA divides its interventions into several axes. Among them, we find: the culture of risk to be developed within populations living in flood zones, the carrying out of flood diagnostics, which make it possible to assess the vulnerability of buildings or the implementation of technical arrangements aimed at slowing down floods. water flows.
In total, more than 22 actions are planned, the main objective of which is to better inform residents and support them in protection procedures by putting them in touch with experts and design offices.

Risks linked to flooding

Floods represent a recurring danger for the areas covered by SYMARVA, particularly 100-year floods. This type of flood has a 1% probability of occurring each year. The study program carried out by the union always begins with a careful diagnosis of the buildings. The objective is to assess the resistance of homes to flooding, to identify the risks, and to determine the damage likely to occur.

Subsequently, concrete solutions are proposed, such as the installation of cofferdams (small temporary dams) and devices to protect sensitive property from water. These schemes are offered with financial assistance covering up to 80% of costs for individuals. Small businesses and sensitive public buildings also benefit from adapted subsidies.

This service is completely free and confidential. It allows each resident, business or public body concerned to benefit from personalized support according to their specific needs. Many installations have already been carried out, in particular for people who have been victims of flooding in the past.

Recent rains and the need for action

The heavy rains that have occurred in recent days are a reminder of the crucial importance of these prevention measures. Water levels rose rapidly, increasing the risk of flooding in several communities. Faced with these events, the need to anticipate and reduce vulnerability becomes even more obvious. SYMARVA strongly encourages all residents living in flood zones to have a flood diagnosis carried out to protect their property and their safety.
