Drought: here is what Christophe Béchu should announce this Wednesday in the Pyrénées-Orientales

We had to wait a few months, but as promised by the Minister of Ecological Transition is back in the Pyrénées-Orientales this Wednesday. After a first visit last March, Christophe Béchu will be in Canet-en-Roussillon this Wednesday to announce an action plan against the drought. A plan whose content we already know in part, the broad outlines having been revealed to local stakeholders last Thursday during a video meeting with the minister.

Reutilization projects, renovation of drinking water networks…

According to our information, the State has selected at least seven projects which it will finance to the tune of approximately 50%. Among them, recycling projects, the reuse of wastewater, in particular via coastal wastewater treatment plants like Argelès-sur-Mer, Canet-en-Roussillon or Saint-Cyprien. Projects which would make it possible, particularly in the Argelès sector, to irrigate dozens of farmers in the sector if necessary.

Another aspect of action: the fight against leaks. Between fifty and sixty municipalities in the department should receive funding for the renovation of their drinking water networks. Rural communities would be particularly targeted. The State will also appoint “Mr. or Mrs. Water”, a person appointed for three years who will be responsible for acting as a link between local actors for setting up projects and crisis management, but who will also provide support in engineering subject.

On the major works side, the State should co-finance with the Region the study on a new pipeline which would bring water from the Rhône to the department.
