While Hamas, which took power in this Palestinian territory in 2007, praised the deceased as “support for the Palestinian resistance”, residents, like Hossam Abdallah, judge that Ebrahim Raïssi “does not means nothing” to them.

“With all this destruction and devastation we have suffered, no country has paid attention to us. Why should I care about this man when he has brought us nothing but ruin?” comments this resident of Gaza interviewed by AFP.

The death of Mr. Raïssi “does not concern me at all”, adds Roba Al-Azaïza, a resident of Deir el-Balah, in central Gaza. “I don’t feel sad for him either. I only cry for my people who die every day (….) and for the fact that no one cares about us.”

On October 7, Hamas commandos infiltrated from the Gaza Strip in southern Israel, carried out a bloody attack which resulted in the death of more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP report established in from official Israeli data. Of the 252 people then taken as hostages, 124 are still held in Gaza, including 37 dead according to the army.

Israel vowed to destroy Hamas after this attack, and since the start of the war, more than 35,450 Palestinians, the majority civilians, have been killed in the Gaza Strip, devastated by bombings and the Hamas ground offensive. the Israeli army, according to data from the Health Ministry of the Hamas-led Gaza government.

Mr. Raïssi “never supported us, never kept his promises, never called for a ceasefire and was never at our side. He does not concern us at all”, believes Naji Khodeir, resident of Gaza.

The announcement of the death of the Iranian president comes a little more than a month after an unprecedented attack by Iran against Israel on the night of April 13 to 14 in response to an air strike attributed to Israel in early April on the consular annex of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, in which seven members died, including two senior officials of the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic.

That night, Iran fired some 350 explosive drones and missiles toward Israel, most of which were intercepted by Israel, with the help of foreign countries.
