October’s full moon, also known as the Hunter’s Moon, will be the largest of the year. It is visible from Wednesday evening, although it will not reach its full lunar phase until Thursday.
In addition to being the largest moon of the year, it will also be the brightest, being present for three days, the Star Walk website noted.
At perigee, the Moon will be only 357,364 kilometers from Earth, the closest it will be possible to see this year. For comparison, the average distance between Earth and its satellite is 384,400 kilometers.
To see it properly, Star Walk recommends viewing it at sunset, when it is close to the horizon.
Supermoons only occur three or four times a year, and always consecutively, NASA said.
“At its closest point, the full moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, which occurs when it is farthest from Earth on its orbit,” the American space organization said on its website.
