The Iranian head of state died in a helicopter accident on Sunday May 20, 2024. The tragedy occurred in the province of Eastern Azerbaijan, in the northwest of Iran. The president was killed along with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and several other officials, all on board the plane during the crash.

Ebrahim Raïssi’s plane returned to Tehran after the inauguration of a dam on the Aras River on Sunday in a border area in the province of East Azerbaijan, in the company of his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev.

According to IRNA, the presidential convoy was made up of three helicopters, carrying the head of the Iranian government and several ministers and officials.
