The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaenacted a law making June 9 Gospel Day. The Brazilian government announced this in a note, specifying that the objective is to “highlight the presence” of this musical genre “in the culture and religiosity of millions of Brazilians” and to “valorize it as a significant cultural expression. This gesture is interpreted as an attempt by Lula to get closer to the populous Brazilian evangelical community, historically favorable to the former president. Jair Bolsonaro. The promulgation took place at the seat of government, in the presence of the deputy and evangelical pastor Otoni de Paula (Brazilian Democratic Movement, Mdb), already a fervent supporter of Bolsonaro.

A political position far from that of Lula, recognized De Paula, specifying however that “as long as (the leader of the Workers’ Party) is in office, he will also be my president”. Whatever the political differences, “we have no choice but to pray for her, as the Bible teaches,” the assistant pastor stressed. De Paula also recognizes that “thanks to the social vision” of the president, “many modest people have had access to the ‘bolsa familia’ program (financial support) and to a house with the ‘minha casa, minha vida’ project.” Not to mention that thanks to his approach, “churches saw more doctors and teachers among their members, people who otherwise would not have been able to graduate.” Brazil is considered one of the countries in the world with the largest and most populous evangelical community in the world, a denomination which, according to various estimates, is destined to surpass the Catholic community in terms of number of members.
