Météo- has placed 9 departments in the south of France on orange alert for Thursday October 17. Departments that are barely recovering from the passage of Storm Kirk.

A new Cévennes episode which will hit soils already saturated with water. In a new bulletin published this Wednesday, Météo France places 9 departments on orange vigilance for “rain-flood”, “thunderstorms” or “floods” for the day of Thursday. These are the Alpes-Maritimes, Ardèche, Aveyron, Corrèze, , Lot, Lozère, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Tarn. For Gard, Ardèche and Lozère, this vigilance will be effective from this evening.

Lozère and Gard had already been placed at this level of vigilance on Tuesday afternoon, for rain-flooding and thunderstorms, due to an autumnal episode in the Cévennes described as “classic” by the forecaster. The latter, for example, recorded 97 millimeters of rain in Rousses, in Lozère. A total and immediate interruption of rail traffic between Alès, in Gard, and Langogne, in Lozère, was announced this Wednesday, October 16 by SNCF, until Friday morning. “This line closure is a precautionary measure during bad weather, explained the SNCF on-call service to AFP, for the safety of travelers and in order to avoid any incident.”

In the Cévennes, widespread accumulations of “200 to 300 millimeters” are expected on the Cévennes relief, with “points at 350 millimeters or more”for forty-eight hours, by the end of the day Thursday, warns the meteorological agency. These bad weather “require particular vigilance due to the very heavy accumulations of rain expected”warns the institution. Especially since these areas were already heavily watered barely a week ago, by the heavy precipitation from Storm Kirk.

Updated Wednesday October 16 with the extension of the orange alert.
