The “Etonnants Voyageurs” professional day in Saint-Malo

This Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Chateaubriand Theater in Saint-Malo, the professional day of the “Etonnants Voyageurs” book fair had the aim: Books and reading in the current times, namely the erosion of young people captivated by screens, the need to engage in the ecological transmission of the sector, the rise of AI, the current exciting issues for books and reading; let’s bet on collective intelligence and the need for professionals who get involved in particular; on the territories. Three round tables came to combine reflections, experiences, and experimentation.

The representative of the National Center for Letters, the CNL, did not, at any time, speak about the authors! Yet they are the workers from the start, the creators, responding to the beneficiaries: the big publishers not the small ones, the booksellers, and the libraries responsible for providing guidance.

When we know, according to statistics, that only 1,000 authors receive royalties or remuneration, this means that they are the ones who drive the market! But 6,000,000 French people write, not all of whom publish.

As an example of a writer, there has been a lot of talk about Alice Zeniter, who came to settle in Brittany, in Lanloup, a few years ago, who makes a very good living from her profession, as she is so much in demand in Brittany, she who has a great talent. But when others, on Breton territory, pay for their stands, their travel expenses, their hotels, to make their writings exist. Find out where the error is? Why always give to those who do not need it due to their considerable royalties?

No one is a prophet in their country, that is a certainty because:

– Author residency 0 not eligible

– Grant 0 not eligible

– Writing help 0 not eligible

– Benefit payment 0 not eligible

Even for Members of the Gens de Lettres! who have 40 years of writing.

Moreover, if they are not politically correct, that is where the problem actually lies.

So writing is a luxury, a leisure activity, not a job for them.

The “Etonnants Voyageurs” festival is a great showcase for publishers and booksellers but not for small authors.

When will there be a major authors’ fair who can present their works to share them in real life with the public, the one on whom choices and orientations are currently imposed?

The dream still remains…

NEXT at what time and on which channel to watch the fight?
