The Gombe Garrison Military Tribunal, in Kinshasa, delivered its verdict on Tuesday in the case of the murder of Gires Mukungi Manzanza, member of the Commitment for Citizenship and Development (ECiDé). The accused police officer, Senior Police Officer (SPO) Iyoko, was convicted of the offenses of murder and violation of peacetime orders, and was sentenced to the death penalty.

As part of the civil reparation, the court also ordered the accused, jointly with the Congolese State, to pay a symbolic Congolese franc to ECiDé, which had become a civil party. The verdict meets the expectations of the political party, which reiterated its commitment to working for justice and respect for human rights.

“ECiDé will continue to fight for a society where justice and the rule of law reign,” said Devos Kitoko Mutenda, Secretary General of ECiDé, in a press release.

This judgment follows several weeks of trial, during which the ECiDé requested strict application of the law to honor the memory of their murdered comrade.
